The Challenge

Currently one of a handful of coffee companies worldwide that not only roasts coffee, but also manufactures coffee making equipment, Miko Coffee was established in 1801 when founder Leo Michielsen started a grocery shop dealing in colonial merchandise. However it was only around the turn of the century, around the year 1900, that the business decided to develop a coffee roasting business under the Miko brand as it’s main activity.

Since then the brand has survived two world wars (roasting acorns for coffee throughout), pioneered the development of ground and vacuum packed coffee and expanded their business to also manufacture coffee machines.

This takes us to 2013, when Miko Coffee decided that they wanted to centralise distribution, from four separate distribution centres to one. After searching for suitable premises, Dinnington in Sheffield was chosen as the ideal location and size of unit.

The search for a solution

However the warehouse wasn’t completely ready for Miko Coffee to move in initially and they needed to begin a search for a contractor to come in and fit out their new industrial interiors to their requirements.

Miko asked around and Nexus were identified after a recommendation. They invited us in to discuss their requirements for the new space and after a while it was clear that Miko required a contractor like Nexus who would manage and implement the whole project for them.

Graham, Head of Procurement & Logistics at Miko Coffee has a busy job and he now had an office move and a fit out to plan for. This is why we aimed to help him out as much as possible. We aimed to take all the stress away from him in regards to the fit out.

Why Miko Coffee chose Nexus

During our initial discussions, we discovered Miko’s requirements for the new space, what currently worked for them and what was working against them and combined all that into a new space that improved not only their premises but also their working practices.

All this information helps us to create a design and proposal that is bespoke to Miko’s requirements. Once the designs were drawn up, we delivered them to Miko personally and went through the itemised quote with them too.

The proposals included all aspects of the industrial interior fit out, office space and the canteen facilities. After a few tweaks to the proposal, we came up with the correct solution for Miko Coffee’s needs. Miko wanted a working environment that their employees looked forward to working in.

Therefore a quirkiness was built into the design with taps added to the end of shelves and a display shop front built onto the wall at the top of the stairs, adding character to the design of the office space for Miko Coffee.

The industrial interior fit out solution

The industrial interior fit out project encompassed a warehouse and office fit out at Miko Coffee’s new main UK distribution centre in Sheffield. In the warehouse, we installed brand new warehouse lighting, whilst in the office, we installed new lighting, suspended ceilings, carpets, partitioning, a display shop window and a modern kitchen area.

The kitchen space is a great area for Miko’s employees to relax and enjoy one of their very own beverages. Miko wanted an area that their employees could take pride in and enjoy being in, so we gave the kitchen area a very homely feel with an element of quirkiness. Whilst at the top of their stairs leading to the office space, we created a display shop front, to add more character to the surroundings.

Nexus completed all aspects of the warehouse and office fit out and the project was completed on budget and on time. Miko’s Head of Procurement & Logistics is happy with the finished premises and commented that

Miko Coffee now have a facility loved by their employees that allows them to continue serving their coffee loving UK clients. It was a pleasure working with Graham and everyone at Miko Coffee and we wish them all the best for the future.
